Sanken CS-M1 Supercardioid Short Shotgun Microphone

NAB this year was a bit of a let down but one of the new items announced that has peaked my interest is the Sanken CS-M1. I got to listen to beta unit this past November and for the price point of $895.00 it should be a winner. It will be available early June from your favorite sound vendor below is some more specs and info on the microphone.

The Sanken CS-M1 is a compact and rugged supercardioid short shotgun microphone designed to deliver clear close and distant audio capture for boom operators, videographers, and audio engineers in film, television, and video production as well as ENG and music recording applications. Its short 4″ length and low 1.9 oz weight make it ideal for mounting on your DSLR or boompole. The supercardioid/lobar polar pattern yields precise directionality and low coloration at the off-axis sections of the capsule. An integrated RFI shield yields enhanced rejection of radio-frequency interference.
The electret condenser element is powered via 48V phantom power and produces a frequency response of 100 Hz to 18 kHz. An XLR 3-pin output ensures compatibility with most microphone preamps. Plosives and wind noise can be reduced by attaching the supplied windscreen. The CS-M1 ships with a vinyl case for safe and convenient transport.

Tech Tip: K-Tek K-SPT Shoe Plate Mount

One of the biggest challenges is mounting equipment to cameras as they get smaller and smaller. for years I have used these Ktek Hot Shoe Plates. New Equipment: Scheops Miniature Microphone MiniCMIT

The Schoeps CMIT has always been one of my favorite microphones with great reach, warm sound and low noise floor. I didn’t think it could be improved but they did by making it smaller. The only copromise is the fixed 4th order low-cut filter at 70 Hz so far I think it is a good trade off. I will post more after using this microphone more but so far it seems like a winner

Recording a Double System Backup

It is never a bad idea to record a backup when doing single system work directly to camera. Having a high quality direct copy available for post can sometimes save productions. It is always higher quality because I am recording at 24 bit 48khz and the preamps in a sound devices, deva or fostex recorder are and will always be much higher quality.  Some people may question why record at 24/48 instead of 16/44.1 if this is only a backup. Well with my new 702T and a 32gb Compact Flash (CF) card I have about 31 hours of record time so I don’t have to worry about running out oof space. I usually copy the CF card every 2 days at night while sleeping. Since I have a 500gb drive I just keep the back ups until the drive is full and then replace older back ups. If a client ever wants a back up I charge them to copy it over and then sent it. It has only happened once but I am always ready if it happens again. On commercials and non reality jobs I usually mirror to the dvd-ram drive and provide the client with the back up everyday, which is standard practice.  I firmly believe whenever possible it is my job to safe guard the audio and make sure we have all of it. Doing a back up recording ensures this.
