New Equipment: Cinela COSI

In a bag or eng setting being fast and compact is being key while not scarifying audio quality. The Cinela COSI is a new self contained windscreen and shock mount for boompole use that provides superior shock absorption and good wind protection in moderate conditions. It is more compact and lighter then standard full size zeppelins while still providing good wind protection in most situations. So if your in the market for a new integrated product check out the Cinela COSI. Below is a video by Cinela to see it in action

New Equipment: Denecke JB-1 Sync Box

Denecke the leader in time code products was as late the party with a super miniature time code box but late to the party doesn’t mean you can’t steal the show. The JB-1 is about the size of a 9V battery and has a built in rechargeable battery with over 150 hours of life with screen backlight turned off. The software running it is so accurate no need to re jam it during the day as its accurate to 1 sub frame within 24 hours. Another cool feature is ability to flip display if mounting the upside down. Overall a great addition to the equipment inventory.

On Location: First Live Instagram to Space Station

This job had many moving parts to it will very little prep time and only one chance to get it right. With two different IFB lines being routed via mission control along with everything going through the Instagram application I wasn’t 100%  sure how it would work but thankfully it all worked well. The biggest issue was gain stage control which is why Will is speaking loud as we couldn’t get a good level into the phone using an external mic. Enjoy !

On Location: Daily Show Space Force

One of my specialities is fast pace quick turn around productions. This shoot for The Daily Show was airing about 12 hours after we filmed it, Production requested a Stereo Mix track to both cameras and timecode boxes to keep everything in sync along with transcription upload at wrap. The shoot went well and they were able to use my mix track to save time. So if you need to be perfect the first time with no second takes give me a call.

Equipment used Sound Devices 633, Lectrosonics SMV/ SRC , Cos 11 lav mics , RE-50 Stick Mic and Mozegear timecode boxes.

Tech Tip: K-Tek K-SPT Shoe Plate Mount

One of the biggest challenges is mounting equipment to cameras as they get smaller and smaller. for years I have used these Ktek Hot Shoe Plates. They are well built out of aluminum and allow velcro to stick to them very well. I can attach wireless, timecode boxes and any other things. Available for around $40.00 at your local camera or audio retailer kspt

Audio Technica M-50X Headphones

After being a Sound mixer for close to 20 years I have used many different brand and types of headphones. The classic recommended headphone for years has been the Sony MDR 7506 but I have never been of fan of them due to comfort and tonal quality. For cart based work and non fast pace bag work. I have become a real fan of the Audio Technica M-50 X Headphones for comfort , accurate sound reproduction and durability. One of the other positive attributes of the M-50 is the cable is user replaceable and comes with a straight/ coiled option depending upon what your doing. At a price point of under $150.00 they are also still cheap enough if you lose them its still going to be ok. So if your looking for a new set of headphones check them out from your favorite audio retailer.
