Sound Devices 664 Review Part 2
The more I use my Sound Devices 664 the more I like it. It has been excelling on many different types of shoots for me. Most of my clients are surprised that a machine this sleek can do so much. The other great thing about the machine is battery life. I can easily make it 8 hours with the 664 and 2 Lectrosonics SR in my bag. So 2 Np1 will power my package all day the 788 will easily eat 4 Np1 during a 12 hour day. When your in ENG mode running around only having to carry 1 spare NP1 is a huge deal. It also sits very well in the Petrol 617 bag that I have been using its firmware is rock slot I have not had any media I/O errors or operational errors at all.
Sound Devices 664 Review Part 1
I have always been a fan of Sound Devices products I have owned or currently own every one of there products from the MM1 headphone amp to the 788T. The build quality and support are outstanding I have never had a Sound Devices product have a complete fatal failure on me on set and I have never lost a single file on any of its recorders. So what sets the 664 apart from its other recorders and mixers? The answer is everything it brings together the best of both product lines it has all the benefits of a mixer and it also recorders. Now is is important to understand the 664 is a mixer that is a recorder not a recorder that also can do a mix.
This is what makes it such a great machine it allows effortless connection to camera and the ability to to also record a high quality iso track as well. It will also make a great bag rig for my film work as well. It is also very easy to use and set up with under 10 menus I had my machine ready to work in under 30mins. The 788T is a great machine but it takes some knowledge to configure it correctly. In part 2 of my review I will discuss more about what I like about the Sound Devices 664
Lectrosonics SR Wireless Camera Link
When selecting a wireless camera link size, power usage and ease of operation are important factors to consider. That is why I chose the Lectrosonics SR receiver paired with (2) Lectrosonics LMA Transmitters. This system provides a power friendly and high quality system. The Lectrosonics SR Batt sled allows for easy self powering with a Sony “L” Mount style battery for 10+ hours and Using I power 9v I can power each of my LMA Transmitters for 6+ hours. If you’d like assist in building a system I’d be happy to help it is super easy.
Wireless Audio to Camera the only way to go
With the fast pace of production these days and the prevalence of hard disk recording there is no reason to ever be hardwired to camera for audio except for sit down interviews and or things the camera is locked down on a tripod. When your cabled to camera your job is atleast 50 percent harder. There are many different systems and products that can help you achieve a high quality audio send in my next post I will discuss the system I use The Lectrosonics SR and LMA set up
